On 21st June the delegation of Euroregion Baltic, chaired by President Jacek Protas, met the Lithuanian Minister of Interior, Mr Raimundas Palaitis. The meeting concerned the future participation of Klaipeda County in Euroregion Baltic.
The administrative reform which has begun in Lithuania will terminate Klaipeda County Administration and the post of its Governor on June 30th (Klaipeda County Governor was one of the signatories of the agreement establishing Euroregion Baltic). Minister Raimundas Palaitis informed that since July 1st it will be the regional development councils operating within the borders of the existing counties which will take over the responsibility for international relations. The Government of the Republic of Lithuania, he continued, will appoint Mr Arunas Burksas (Klaipeda County Governor until June 30th) as its representative to the regional development council in Klaipeda County. The work of the council will be assisted by a small office – unit of the Lithuanian Ministry of Interior. In July this year the regional development council in Klaipeda (which will act without legal personality) will discuss the issue of further participation in Euroregion Baltic. If the council is positive towards the cooperation, the Ministry of Interior of Lithuania – acting as a legal person – will represent the Lithuanian Party in Euroregion Baltic.
