Cross-border Cooperation between Poland and Lithuania

Euroregion Baltic representatives took part in the 13th meeting of the Inter-governmental Polish – Lithuanian Commission on Cross-border Cooperation held  in Warsaw on 20th May.

Co-chaired by the Deputy Minister of Interior of Poland, Mr Piotr Stachanczyk and Deputy Minister of Interior of Lithuania, Mr Sigitas Siupsinskas, the Commission discussed work reported by the three working groups within the Commission, i.e. Working Groups on cross-border cooperation, on inter-regional cooperation, and on spatial planning. Euroregion Baltic had its presentation highlighting the aspects of the Lithuanian and Polish  cooperation within the Euroregion. Consequences of the ongoing administration reform in Lithuania were also discussed, with particular attention paid to cross-border cooperation and euroregions. The Lithuanian partners announced that the regional development councils which will continue thier work after 1st July 2010 in the Lithuanian counties will be equippped with tools to ratify existing international cooperation agreements (signed by the administrations of the counties). It was also stressed that local authorities, especially of the major cities in the counties, should become natural driving forces of corss-border and inter-regional cooperation in Lithuania.
